I'm totally stoked -- David H Albert is doing two days' worth of seminars at our state homeschooling conference in March. I find his writing about education and life in general tremendously inspiring, and he's addressing subjects like young adolescents and "sixes and sevens". Perfect!

Also, my friend Kim is doing a zine workshop...

... more about the conference later, but suffice it to say that it's worth all the data entry I volunteer to do to register people in advnace of this thing to get a) a suite at the conference center in suburban CHGO and b) first crack at all the workshops for me and the kids.

Cody's working on math and Lilly has just trotted out her abacus. She uses Singapore Math and is doing the last exercise in the 1B books. I'm doing a book order next week. More info on that too.

Where do y'all get materials you use? Does anyone go hardcore on curriculum?

What a craptastic time to start a homeschooling journal!

I actually plan to update before the holiday -- the photos Cody took of the prairie burn were phenomenal -- but I have soccer and then work and then company for a few days.

So... when I have a few minutes I'll write about what we've been doing, our philosophy (such as it is), and my children. The stuff I read about other kids amazes me -- they're all so different. My two kids couldn't be more different in terms of learning style, though one of them has spent time in scshool and the other hasn't.

Just wanted to get something posted before the break... I'll be back.

We've been a little slow getting going this AM. It's cold; I think we're all in the mood to hunker.

I got up to check email and put on the coffee; Cody was up shortly thereafter, checking the news and offering his opinions on the Bernard Kerik thing. Lilly opted to stay in bed, reading Calvin & Hobbes while I took Jim to work/deposited a check/put air in the tires/put gas in the car/bought bagels/stopped by the cafe, all in my pajamas. Got word from my friend Lew that the Park District decided last night to do the Meadowbrook Prairie burn today, so we're all getting dressed and heading out to do that, since we could all use some sunshine after the two weeks without.

Couple short errands will follow, then it's home to the books and some baking.

I'll write more later about the family, what we're using for homeschooling purposes and our philosophy (which is pretty fluid and thus has morphed considerably over the last five years) and also about household management and my theories/philosophies about that, technically being a "housewife" and all. Heh.

This journal will likely be mostly for my own recordkeeping, but as always I'm happy to share info and would be stoked to have people reading and offering comments. Go ahead and add if you want! Most posts will be public, though I'd lock some if I felt it was necessary.

Thanks to triplep for the prod.
